Welcome & Announcements

In the name of Christ we welcome everyone to our worship for the tenth Sunday after Pentecost.

This week our worship is led by Father Will Holt, with music supplied by Rhonda Stanton and Zoë Pouliot. The scriptures in our service are read by members of Grace.

Announcements: Thank you to Wilma and Berry for the work you did spraying outside Dreiss-Founders Hall. That area has great promise as we open it up for God’s work, in God’s time.

We are collecting non-perishable food and non-food items for a nearby food pantry. The office is closed 8/10 through 8/17 so hold those items and then bring them in to the blue bin in Ketchum Hall.

Bishop Phoebe Roaf has an update on our diocesan situation vis a vis the virus.

Are you a member at Grace? Please join the Members’ Group on Facebook. We also have a public Facebook page. In this time of physical separation, we want to keep developing these avenues of communication and we welcome YOU.

Children’s Resources

When you reach the 4:11 mark, you could finish by asking some “wondering” questions about this dramatic story. “Wondering” questions in Godly Play don’t have right and wrong answers, the intention is to encourage the children to interact with the story a little more deeply.

  • “I wonder what part of this story you liked best?”
  • “I wonder how Joseph felt about having those dreams?
  • “I wonder why his brothers reacted that way?”
  • “I wonder how his brothers and parents felt about those dreams?”
  • “I wonder what part of the story is most important?”
  • “I wonder if there’s any part of this story we could leave out, and still have all the story we need?”
  • “I wonder if you are in this story, or if any part of this story is especially for you?”

The Tenth Sunday After Pentecost

Opening Hymn: 522  Glorious things of thee are spoken

Rhonda Stanton and Zoë Pouliot

1 Glorious things of thee are spoken,
Zion, city of our God;
he whose word cannot be broken
formed thee for his own abode;
on the Rock of Ages founded,
what can shake thy sure repose?
With salvation’s walls surrounded,
thou may’st smile at all thy foes.

2 See! the streams of living waters,
springing from eternal love,
well supply thy sons and daughters
and all fear of want remove.
Who can faint, when such a river
ever flows their thirst to assuage?
Grace which, like the Lord, the giver,
never fails from age to age.

3 Round each habitation hovering,
see the cloud and fire appear
for a glory and a covering,
showing that the Lord is near.
Thus deriving from their banner,
light by night, and shade by day;
safe they feed upon the manna
which he gives them when they pray.

4 Blest inhabitants of Zion,
washed in the Redeemer’s blood!
Jesus, whom their souls rely on,
makes them kings and priests to God.
‘Tis his love his people raises
over self to reign as kings:
and as priests, his solemn praises
each for a thank-offering brings.

Gospel Hymn: 550  Jesus calls us o’er the tumult

Rhonda Stanton and Zoë Pouliot

1 Jesus calls us; o’er the tumult
of our life’s wild, restless sea,
day by day his clear voice soundeth,
saying, “Christian, follow me.”

2 As, of old, Saint Andrew heard it
by the Galilean lake,
turned from home and toil and kindred,
leaving all for his dear sake.

3 Jesus calls us from the worship
of the vain world’s golden store;
from each idol that would keep us,
saying, “Christian, love me more.”

4 In our joys and in our sorrows,
days of toil and hours of ease,
still he calls, in cares and pleasures,
“Christian, love me more than these.”

5 Jesus calls us! By thy mercies,
Savior, may we hear thy call,
give our hearts to thine obedience,
serve and love thee best of all.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:22-33

Reflections on Life

Father Will Holt

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God,
    the Father, the Almighty,
    maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
    the only Son of God,
    eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
    true God from true God,
    begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
        he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
        and was made man.
    For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
            in accordance with the Scriptures;
        he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Closing Hymn: 530 Spread, O spread, thou mighty word

Rhonda Stanton and Zoë Pouliot

1.  Spread, O spread, thou mighty word
Spread the kingdom of the Lord
That to earth’s remotest bound
All may heed the joyful sound.

2.  Word of how the Father’s will
Made the world, and keeps it still
How his only Son he gave
Earth from sin and death to save

3. Word of how the Savior’s love
Earth’s sore burden doth remove
How forever, in its need
Through his death the world is freed

4.  Word of how the Spirit came
Bringing peace in Jesus’ name
How his never-failing love
Guides us on to heaven above.

5. Word of life, most pure and strong
Word for which the nations long
Spread abroad until from night
All the world awakes to light.
