Welcome & Announcements
In the name of Christ we welcome everyone to our worship for the 13th Sunday after Pentecost. Participate in this service as you are able, by standing, sitting, praying and singing aloud if you are so moved!
This week if we were meeting in person, we would have had the joy of welcoming Bishop Phoebe Roaf for our annual Bishop’s visit. Sadly that could not happen but Bishop Phoebe has sent us her sermon and a benediction on video. Father Will is also with us for parts of the worship service.
Our church musicians Rhonda Stanton and Zoë Pouliot are joined this week by talented members of the KPAC young artists group, Briley Medlin, age 13, and Townes Boyd, age 14, and Rhonda’s friend Donna Pennington.
The scriptures in our service are read by members of Grace: Susan and Pat Woods and Dianne Carlisle.
Settle in for a wonderful worship service, as we give thanks to God for another week and seek God’s care, guidance and strength for the week to come.
Children’s Resources
- Lectionary-based readings and activities for families for the week of Aug 30
- Coloring Page to Download and Print (relates to today’s gospel)
- Godly Play: The Story of Moses This video covers the whole sweep of Moses’ life, so we’ll take it in two parts. Stop the video at the 4:49 mark this week, and we’ll pick up from that spot next week. This will track somewhat with the Old Testament readings in our worship service.
The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Opening Acclamation
Opening Hymn: 400 All Creatures of Our God and King
1 All creatures of our God and King,
lift up your voices, let us sing:
alleluia, alleluia!
Bright burning sun with golden beams,
Pale silver moon that gently gleams,
O praise him, O praise him,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
2 Great rushing winds and breezes soft,
you clouds that ride the heavens aloft,
O praise him, Alleluia!
Fair rising morn, with praise rejoice,
stars nightly shining, find a voice:
O praise him, O praise him,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
3 Swift flowing water, pure and clear,
make music for your Lord to hear,
Alleluia, alleluia!
Fire, so intense and fiercely bright,
you give to us both warmth and light,
O praise him, O praise him,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
4 Dear mother earth, you day by day
unfold your blessings on our way;
O praise him, Alleluia!
All flowers and fruits that in you grow,
let them his glory also show:
O praise him, O praise him,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
5 All you with mercy in your heart,
forgiving others, take your part,
O sing now: Alleluia!
All you that pain and sorrow bear,
praise God, and cast on him your care:
O praise him, O praise him,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
6 And even you, most gentle death,
waiting to hush our final breath,
O praise him, Alleluia!
You lead back home the child of God,
for Christ our Lord that way has trod:
O praise him, O praise him,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
7 Let all things their creator bless,
and worship him in humbleness,
O praise him, Alleluia!
Praise God the Father, praise the Son,
and praise the Spirit, Three in One:
O praise him, O praise him,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Collect of the Day
First Reading: Exodus 3:1-15
Psalm 105:1-6, 23-26, 45c
Second Reading: Romans 12:9-21
Gospel Hymn: Take Up Your Cross
Take up your cross, the savior said
If you would my disciple be
Take up your cross with willing heart
And humbly follow after me
Take up your cross, let not its weight
Fill your weak spirit with alarm
His strength shall bear your spirit up
And brace your heart, and nerve your arm
Take up your cross, heed not the shame
And let your foolish heart be still
The Lord, for you, accepted death
Upon a cross on Calvary’s hill
Take up your cross, then in his strength
And calmly every danger brave
It guides you to abundant life
And leads to victory o’er the grave
Take up your cross and follow Christ
Nor think ’til death to lay it down
For only those who bear the cross
Can hope to wear the glorious crown
Gospel Reading: Matthew 16:21-28
Sermon: Bishop Phoebe Roaf
Nicene Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People
Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church;
That we all may be one.
Grant that every member of the Church may truly and
humbly serve you;
That your Name may be glorified by all people.
We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;
That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and
Sacraments.
We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations
of the world;
That there may be justice and peace on the earth.
Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;
That our works may find favor in your sight.
Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;
That they may be delivered from their distress.
Give to the departed eternal rest.
Let light perpetual shine upon them.
We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;
May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.
Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.
Silence
The People may add their own petitions.
Collect At the Prayers of the People
Closing Hymn: The Servant Song
Sister, let me be your servant.
Brother let me walk with you.
Pray that I might have the grace
To let you be my servant, too.
We are pilgrims on a journey.
Fellow trav’lers on the road.
We are here to help each other
Walk the mile and bear the load.
I will weep when you are weeping.
When you laugh, I’ll laugh with you.
I will share your joy and sorrow
“Til we’ve seen this journey through.
When we sing to God in heaven,
We shall find such harmony
Born of all we’ve known together
Of Christ’s love and agony.
Brother, let me be your servant.
Sister, let me walk with you.
Pray that I might have the grace
To let you be my servant, too.
Benediction: Bishop Phoebe Roaf
